Prayer of the Day

Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time

July 2nd, 2014
""The whole town went out to meet Jesus."" Matthew 8 : 34
dvgt 04 001b ch45.02 demonized man

In today’s Gospel,  we read that Jesus took a boat to the other side of the sea of Galilee and arrived in Gadara.  It was here that he was encountered by two men possessed by demons.  Demons or unclean spirits have the power to control human behaviour.  A person accused of demon possession is someone who has a deviant behaviour.  He represents a threat,  and is therefore excluded from the community.  It is clear that the demons speaking through the men were threatened by Jesus and recognised that he had the power and authority to overcome them.  In a desperate last pleading,  they ask to be sent into a herd of pigs.  These are unclean animals according to the Jewish law.  When possessed,  the pigs in turn,  rush to the sea.  Thus everything is once again in their rightful place.  The two demoniacs are back to sanity and the evil ones to their home.  Instead of being grateful to Jesus,  as one might expect,  the community is awestruck and beg him to leave the region.   We cannot fully understand the realm of evil,  but it is enough for us to understand that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue,  in heaven and on earth,  will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Prayer Lord, teach me not to be afraid to witness to my faith and to proclaim the joy of the Gospel. Amen
