Prayer of the Day
Twenty Third Sunday of the YearSeptember 4th, 2016
Jesus is here speaking to the crowds who have travelled around with him. He is outlining what kind of followers he is looking for. All he can offer them is to carry the cross after him. He spells out the renunciation required to be his follower. There is no other way. The cross is there for everyone, but it is what we do with it that counts before Jesus. We never know beforehand in what guise the cross will come. Jesus is asking us to carry it after him. In this way we are marked out as his disciples.
Jesus so often we feel the cross we carry is a burden. We feel weighed down, even afraid and unable to take one step. Be with us Lord in these moments of anguish. Keep our eyes focused on you and give us the strength to go on. Give us an ever deeper insight on the way of the cross in our daily lives and be with us always. Amen
