Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop & Doctor of the Church

August 1st, 2015
"Jesus said to his disciples; ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled on by men.’" Matthew 5 : 13

“You are the light of the world.  A city build on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on a lamp stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5 : 14)

The emphases is on ‘salt and light’ nothing more useful. The commitment of the disciple is reflected in this imagery.  Though persecuted you have a vocation for the world. Light, imagery is applied to ‘faith’ God and Jesus.  The true disciple must not shrink from their mission. ‘Let your light shrine.’

God our Father, May the holy Eucharist we receive give you never–ending thanksgiving. Amen
